Introduction

Omnilore is an all-volunteer organization, now a California 501(c)(3) nonprofit, and we have been providing socializing and learning opportunities for the 55 and up community for 35 years. Our members volunteer to coordinate classes, organize field trips and luncheons in local restaurants, hold movie discussion nights, and plan walking group routes. The five-member board of directors and our management council see to our day-to-day operations.

Video Introduction – Welcome

This two-minute video illustrates some highlights of Omnilore while serving as an introduction to our learning community.

  • Omnilore is a peer-led learning in retirement organization that provides opportunities to gather together to socialize and enjoy each other’s company, engage in shared inquiry about various topics, and make new friends.
  • Lifestyle Activities include monthly Field Trips, Movies with Friends, enjoying a meal, and going Behind the Kitchen Door at local restaurants, our Writers Workshop and Walking group, and our STEM discussion gatherings, with new interest groups on the horizon.
  • Every four months, we offer a selection of classes, called study discussion groups (SDGs) – members are free to choose up to six of these each trimester. Topics typically include the sciences, history, literature, the arts, film, current events and reading Shakespeare together.
  • Each trimester, SDGs meet every two weeks, for two hours each time. Class members decide at a pre-meeting how the class should be organized. If there’s a book involved, the chapters are shared out among class members, then individuals put together chapter discussion questions for their chapter. Each class member also has an opportunity to teach the others about a related topic of interest, with mentors available to help guide you. Participants can choose to present their topic in any number of ways – demonstrations, Q and A discussions, PowerPoints, recordings, by overhead projector, skits, etc. Lots of opportunity for creativity in a friendly and welcoming space!
  • Our SDG’s are conveniently held live in our classrooms at Beach Cities Health Center (514 N. Prospect Ave., Redondo Beach) or in a hybrid format – combined classroom and Zoom.
  • Before joining Omnilore, you’re free to attend a class session, and we’ll orient you to make sure you and Omnilore are a good fit for each other.
  • We have Forum luncheons three times a year, giving us a welcome opportunity to catch up, enjoy a good meal, and listen to interesting speakers. There is an additional charge for this.
  • Annual membership is $250 per year for electronic communications (October through September), but if you’re joining us other than in September, we’ll prorate your first year’s membership fee. Annual memberships include all of our Lifestyle Activities.
  • An annual Lifestyles membership is $125 per year, can also be prorated for the first year, and includes enrollment only in Lifestyle Activities, not SDG’s.
  • For either of the two types of membership, if you want Omnilore materials mailed to you by postal delivery instead of electronically, there’s an additional $30 surcharge.
