The Omnilore Best Sellers Book Discussion SIG, formed in May, 2012, has been extended for another trimester. The SIG meets via Zoom on the second Monday of each month from noon to 1:00 P.M., to discuss the “book of the month” in a free-form format using open-ended discussion questions. This SIG is open to all Omniloreans who are interested in reading and discussing current best sellers, both fiction and nonfiction. Everyone is welcome to attend whether you’ve finished the book, are in the process of reading it, or are just curious about the topic.
As with any Special Interest Group, there is no need to enroll, no need to do a presentation…just link into Zoom on the day and time with enthusiasm, prepared to participate. The Zoom password is emailed to members a few days prior to our meeting.
Here are our upcoming selections for 2021:
Current: Monday December 13, 2021 (Fiction):
The Lost Apothecary by Sarah Penner
The Bestsellers Book Discussion SIG will round the year out on Monday, December 13th at noon with a fictional novel that’s suspenseful, with unforgettable characters, a long-forgotten history, a secret network, and a legacy of poison and revenge.
The Lost Apothecary looks at an 18th century London apothecary shop that caters to an unusual kind of clientele. Women across the city whisper of a mysterious figure named Nella who sells well-disguised poisons to use against the oppressive men in their lives. But the apothecary’s fate is jeopardized when her newest patron, a precocious twelve-year-old, makes a fatal mistake, sparking a string of consequences that echo through the centuries.
Meanwhile in present-day London, aspiring historian Caroline Parcewell spends her tenth wedding anniversary alone, running from her own demons. When she stumbles upon a clue to the unsolved apothecary murders that haunted London two hundred years ago, her life collides with the apothecary’s in a stunning twist of fate–and not everyone will survive.

Think Again: The Power of Knowing What You Don’t Know by Adam Grant
In the January non-fiction selection for Bestsellers Book Discussion – Think Again, Adam Grant weaves together research and storytelling to help us examine the critical art of rethinking:learning to question our opinions as new data and facts are presented. Sometimes, we just may not know what we don’t know.
The book points out that in a rapidly changing world, new data, fact, information is continually evolving. All too often, people become rigid in their beliefs and forget to look at their assumptions and conclusions to rethink and validate them. They think too much like preachers defending our sacred beliefs, prosecutors proving the other side wrong, and politicians campaigning for approval–and too little like scientists searching for truth. Through a series of guiding principles, the author provides actual examples of how they work in real life for a wide range of individuals.
If knowledge is power, knowing what we don’t know is wisdom. All Omniloreans are invited to participate in discussing this new way of understanding the world around us.
