If you have strong intellectual curiosity and love science, please join our STEM group. For most of the world, STEM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering and Math. However, for our avid science-loving STEM group, we’ve altered that acronym slightly to stand for Science, Technology, Evolution and Meaning. That’s because this group is deeply interested in the “big” difficult questions in science and any new advances that are helping mankind to better understand these questions. The Group hopes to focus on the implications of scientific discovery towards the meaning of human life and our future of humanity.
Uniquely, this discussion group is open not only to Omniloreans and also to any other intellectually curious and science-loving individuals (typically currently employed scientist living and working in the South Bay who are friends of the an existing Omnilore member) who could (now or in the future when they retire and have more time) join Omnilore and become a member. The participation of these “outsiders” enhances the richness and depth of discussions, and the group wholeheartedly welcomes them.
The STEM Group holds its discussions within a member’s private home or backyard. Discussions are held once a month, on the first Thursday of each month, from 5pm to 7pm. Members typically bring light refreshments and drinks to share. Interacting with each other socially is vital to the goal of this group. Each meeting is facilitated by a different member, who selects a topic and the background material (video, article, book) to support that topic; most requiring one to two hours of viewing, listening, or reading. If the group decides to go with that topic, and the background material that supports it, then the topic is scheduled by the coordinators.
The current co-coordinators can be reached by emailing STEM-Group@omnilore.org. Contact them if you are interested in joining and you will be put on an email mailing list to be notified about upcoming events. In addition, information about the next meeting of this group is available through the EVENT navigation bar above, select the comprehensive calendar and look for all the STEM (Science) Group notices.
